CHAPTER 16

Pearce splashed into the little stream below after sliding down the ladder. With the hatch sealed, he was trapped in darkness. His hands fumbled over his vest in search of anything to generate light.

“There he is!”

The beam from a flashlight engulfed him. Pearce raised his fists, then settled after recognizing the family.

“We thought they killed you,” Star said. Pearce stared at them, confused. Why would they stay and wait for him? They looked up, hearing movement from above.

“No time to waste,” Pearce said, his voice hoarse from the smoke and dust. He took the flashlight from Paul and led them down the corridor. The water and metal walls bounced the white light back at him, revealing a long narrow corridor. From where they stood there didn’t appear to be an end in sight.

“What is this place?” Graf asked.

“It was probably constructed before the nuclear war. I’m assuming somebody found it during the Revival Wars and wanted it for themselves, so they decided to fortify a defense.”

“Is there a way out?” Star asked.

“We’ll probably find one if we keep searching,” Pearce said. “Come on.”

The family followed him as he moved down the corridor.
